– Scale your yard and figure out how much space you have.
– Consider environmental and ecological condition of the area you live in, such as availability of water, usual high and low temperature, rainfall etc. before you start making any other plans.
– Figure out your personal preference; are you a green person who would rather have small trees or flower person? Do you like decorative stones or gravel?
– Get as much information possible about gardening and landscaping ideas through online research, reading books and joining various forums.
– Create a blueprint of your landscaping designs and plans.
– Talk to someone experienced who can give you detailed information about various landscaping materials, such as decorative sand, gravel, mulch, topsoil, decorative stones etc.
– Gather information about what exactly you want to plant in your garden.
– Figuring out how you are going to provide adequate water, without wasting any, to your landscaping should be one of the topmost priorities.
– Create a budget and stick to it. Many times, DIY enthusiasts become impulsive and invest in something that they will not need immediately. Also, a budget should be created for long term, preferably for the next five to six years, and then broken down to monthly and yearly basis.
– While most people think only flora and fauna when they think about landscaping, some hardscaping features, such as decorative stones around the garden, gravel driveway, decks and patios, and sheds should be incorporated as well.
