Summer heat is upon us which makes residential cooling a must in most places. Two out of three homes in the United States have air conditioners and you can bet that those units get a work out during the summer time. The Worst thing to experience is a break down in your residential HVAC unit during the hottest part of the year. The good news is regular maintenance of your unit can reduce breakdowns by as much as 75%, and twice a year inspections are recommended. Aside from regular maintenance to reduce ac repair incidents consider these friendly tips to help you beat the summer heat and keep residential cooling off your list of worries this summer.

Filters

Checking and changing filters is an absolute must for proper HVAC maintenance. This simple act can reduce the amount of air conditioning repair your unit needs during the hot summer months. Clogged filters cause your system to have to work harder and consumer more energy in order to produce the same amount of air to cool your residence.

Thermostat

Ensure that your thermostat is placed correctly. This means make sure that it is not in direct sunlight. Make sure not to put lights or other sources of heat near your furnace. This can give a false reading which can make your unit work harder to cool thinking it is hotter than it really is. This unnecessary running is not only hard on your air conditioner but it can make residential cooling even harder during the summer.

Open all Vents

Your ac unit should be installed to provide a balance of air all through the house, but this can’t happen if things aren’t open. Opening all vents and all doors helps create that balance and helps circulate air throughout the entire house. This reduces opening doors and letting hot air out which will raise temperatures drastically causing your unit to work extra hard to cool the air down.

Window Coverings

Covering the windows that let in the most heat can help reduce some of the heat that comes into your home. Indulge in blackout curtains for those windows and use them. Adhesive applications can help shade the window to block out some of the sunlight. Keeping excess heat out of the home means your unit doesn’t have to work as hard to cool it down.

Summer months are brutal, but that doesn’t mean your ac unit has to take a beating. Follow these simple tips to help your unit out a little. Your ac unit and your pocketbook will both thank you.
