American houses, mainly suburban ones, feature a garage, a room with a concrete floor where vehicles may be parked and protected from the elements. Not only that, but garages are also useful storage spaces, where items may be stored directly on the floor, in buckets, or on racks or shelves as well. And that’s not all. Some handy Americans convert their garages into a sort of workshop, where they can tinker with their car, launch wood working projects, or even invent something. Some of the earliest computers, such as those made by Apple, were built in a garage. Even Steve Jobs’s computer empire was born in a garage, showing how useful these rooms can be.

But like with any other hardware, a garage may need some maintenance or fixing to keep it in good shape. Often, a garage and its features can be easily taken for granted, from the concrete floor to garage doors to the light overhead, and more. But if these systems fail, garage door repair is necessary, and garage door contractors can be hired. DIY work is not recommended for this; rather, garage door installation is best done with hired professionals, and the same is true of garage door repair work, too. A concerned homeowner can look online with a search such as “garage door installation near me” to find those contractors for replacement or garage door repair.

Why The Door Must be Fixed or Replaced

Just what might go wrong with a garage door, anyway? Unlike the front or back door of a house, these doors are made up of several wide segments with hinges between them. This door, rather than swinging inwards, will roll along two tracks to slid up and along the roof when it opens. When the door closes, it rolls down and becomes vertical, forming a wall. This large, heavy door is not manually operated; rather, a dedicated motor on the ceiling will move it when a button is pressed.

What can go wrong here? That very motor may become the problem, when its power source is disrupted or when it burns out or fails to respond to button presses. This keeps the door closed, making it impossible to get a car in or out short of smashing right through the door (which is certainly not recommended). In other cases, the tracks that keep the door moving may be warped or damaged, meaning the door’s wheels cannot roll as intended. Such a problem may jam the door or keep it from moving past a certain point. In yet other cases, the sensors are an issue. For safety, garage doors have sensors at the floor to sense if something would block the door, and the door will raise itself again if something is within sensor range. If the sensors are not aligned correctly, the automated system will get confused and might not lower or raised correctly as per its safety programming. Some busted garage door systems may need a total overhaul, and garage door repair crews can be hired for exactly that.

Investing in Garage Doors

Many homeowners replace and upgrade the hardware inside or outside of their houses to improve its aesthetics and function alike, and that includes the garage door. Most Americans picture roof repair or installing a wooden deck for hardware replacement, but garage door repair counts, too, and it’s often a sound investment. In fact, repairing or replacing an old garage door may greatly boost a property’s value when it is placed on the real estate market, usually 1-4%. This may result in the homeowner getting much more of a value boost in their property than what they spent on garage door repair in some cases. And best of all, garage replacement work is not as expensive as siding or deck installation, which are two other common forms of home repair or remodeling.

A concerned homeowner can look online to find expert garage replacement or repair crews, and such contractors should have their own website to visit. Such websites may be complete with photos, videos, and articles showcasing their work, and a homeowner may compare a few local contractors before choosing one to hire for the job. Browsing previous client reviews can help, too.

I’m here to share my ideas and guidance about home and family--things I've learned through trial and error. I've already made the mistakes so you don’t have to! Just don’t ask about the kitchen cabinet refinishing project that went awry.
